WNBA champion Sue Bird drives us forward in the fight for gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights
The modern workforce still remains predominantly comprised of men, while a wage gap continues to prevent working women from earning equal pay to their male counterparts.1 As for non-binary gender identities, these workers are not even acknowledged as being part of the workforce, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.2 A gender-inclusive society in which the full workforce, regardless of gender, was equally motivated, employed and groomed for their talent, and paid equally for their work, would directly yield economic growth that is more fairly distributed.3
All women, LGBTQ+ people and people of all gender identities have the right to live safely and openly, with equal access to opportunities to thrive. As the social responsibility partner of the WNBPA, we teamed up with players that are actively fighting for social justice. On the issue of gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights, Sue Bird, a four-time WNBA champion with the Seattle Storm and vice president of the WNBPA, has been an active proponent of this issue, fighting for equality.
“What I think we all hope to do in this fight for equality is change the world,” said Sue Bird in her exclusive Shout Out video with Amalgamated Bank. “It’s a big statement, but I think we really believe we can do that.”

Inspired by our collaboration with activist/player Sue Bird, we will also contribute to Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) through our WNBPA Social Impact Fund, alongside other organizations working for social, racial, economic and gender justice. TLDEF is committed to ending discrimination based on gender identity and to achieving equality for transgender people through public education, test-case litigation, direct legal services, and public policy efforts.
We are incredibly proud to lead the finance sector on issues of social, racial, environmental, and economic justice. Thank you to Sue Bird for being a passionate champion on the issue of LGBTQ+ rights and gender equality and joining her voice and her platform with ours to make a bigger stand on this issue together.
